Four ways in, because no single one works for every book. The ISBN camera reads the barcode on the back cover — and when glare, a sticker or a crease defeats it, the same camera reads the ISBN printed underneath as text and confirms the match from that instead. Photograph a cover and the app runs OCR over it, searches on what it finds, and offers the candidates it is most confident about. Or search by title, author or ISBN and pick from the results.
Lookups run against Google Books, Open Library and isbnsearch.org in turn, so newly released and self-published titles that only one catalogue carries still resolve. Nothing is added without you approving it, and books that arrive twice are merged rather than duplicated.
The bookshop screen. Point it at a barcode and get a one-glance verdict — with the reading status and rating you gave it. If it's new, add it on the spot.
Reachable without opening the app: a Control Center control and Siri on iPhone, a Quick Settings tile and a long-press shortcut on Android.
Track status, star ratings and favourites. Marking a book read stamps the date you finished it, without inventing one when you're only editing a rating.
Group by author, year or category. Filter by reading status or favourites, and search your own shelves by title, author, genre or ISBN.
Import the CSV those sites export — LibraryThing too — or export yours in the same format. Codex JSON export keeps a complete, portable copy.
iCloud keeps your library in step across your Apple devices. On Android, Google Drive Auto Backup restores it when you reinstall or switch phone.
Every book carries its cover, author, year, genre and ISBN — and, once you've read it, your rating and the date you finished. Tap a row to read the blurb. Sections group under gold headers so a long library still scans quickly, and the whole thing works offline once the covers have loaded.
Titles and descriptions that come back in another language can be translated automatically — a single switch in Settings, off by default.
The first ten books are free. Beyond that, a single one-time purchase unlocks an unlimited library — there is no subscription, nothing renews, and it restores free on every device signed in to the same Apple Account or Google account. Books already in your library stay there either way.
There is no Codex Books account, and your library never reaches us. It lives in your own iCloud account on Apple devices and in the app's private storage — backed up to your Google Drive — on Android.
The app talks to the outside world in two places: book metadata lookups to the catalogues listed above, which see only the title or ISBN you are searching for, and optional translation when you turn it on. It also offers anonymous crash reports, which you can switch off in Settings; those contain diagnostics only and never any part of your library. There are no analytics or advertising SDKs.
